Quickly identify and optimize hidden storage costs

Storage costs in AWS, particularly with S3, can easily spiral out of control due to complex billing data and hidden charges. It can be tedious and time-consuming to pinpoint the exact sources of these costs, making it challenging for engineering teams to continually optimize spend.

That’s why our team of FinOps experts purpose-built these filters to make it easy to spot hidden costs and get precise visibility into every layer of your storage expenses — ensuring you can take immediate action to optimize your cloud spending.

What’s New

We’re excited to unveil Storage Filters, the latest addition to nOps Business Contexts+, designed to help you quickly drill down into your AWS storage costs. Starting today, you can access this new feature directly from the BC+ dashboard.

Storage Product

Break down costs for all of your storage products, including S3, EBS, FSx, and more. Gain insights into storage usage for services such as CloudWatch, where storage usage often goes unnoticed.

Storage Product Subtype

A categorization of storage usage types, such as Storage, API Request, Data Transfer, Access, and Fees. Quickly group your storage costs by meaningful categories. Storage and data transfer are often the key focus when investigating storage costs, but data transfer, access and fees can quickly sneak up.

Storage Class

Different levels of storage products, optimizing for cost, performance, and durability (e.g., Standard, One Zone, SSD, Glacier). Oftentimes our analysis of storage utilization stops at the product level, but if we use EBS for example, you can find SSD vs HDD vs Magnetic costs, that may require further investigation.

Storage Tier

Performance and access tiers defining throughput, volume types, and retrieval characteristics (e.g., Frequent Access, 500 MB/s/TiB, Instant Retrieval). Once your storage has been provisioned, costs uniquely tied to the tier can influence your bottom line in unexpected ways. For example, with FSx for Lustre, the speed per tebibyte (TiB) cost can often overshadow the performance gains.

Storage Overhead

Metadata, system processes, and additional storage consumption beyond user data (e.g., Small File Overhead, Object Tag, IT Monitoring Fee). Gain insights into difficult-to-locate costs that can quickly add up.

How it Works

Access the new Storage Filters directly within the cost analysis dashboard of Business Contexts+. Select specific storage products to start analyzing costs. Further refine your results by drilling into product subtypes, storage classes, tiers, and even overhead to uncover detailed cost breakdowns. Quickly isolate exact areas of concern, such as Storage Lens fees, enabling targeted actions for cost optimization.
